stocks
what is it?
Happy monday folks! These quick emails should take 1 minute to read, and you’ll learn a new finance definition + a money tip that I follow ✊
DEFINITION
What’s a stock?
Let’s get real basic today.
Alright, imagine you have a favorite pizza place that's really popular. Now, let's say you want to own a part of that pizza place because you think it's going to keep getting more popular and make more money. So, you buy a little piece of that pizza place. That little piece you buy is called a stock.
Now, when the pizza place makes money, they might share some of it with you because you own a part of it. That's like getting a slice of the profits. But if the pizza place doesn't do well, your piece might not be worth as much as when you bought it. So, owning a stock is like owning a piece of a company, and how well that company does can affect the value of your piece.
PRACTICAL ADVICE
Rent or own?
Ashlea and I rent. It just makes sense for us because we’re not very sure about where we’d want to buy a first home. We also like the simplicity of not worrying about landscaping, HOA fees, maintenance, etc. It gives us more time to focus on things like growing our careers, increasing our income, and traveling.
Honestly, when we buy a house, it’ll probably be around the time we start having mini-Ashlea’s and mini-JC’s.
